SINCE journalist Ange Takats left Australia in 2000, she has joined a folk band in Thailand, followed her heart to Canada and met an Irish nudist – rich inspiration for the lyrics of songs she wrote for her debut folk album Aniseed Tea.
The singer said most of her Americana musical influences came from the Thai musicians she performed with in Bangkok.
They shared with her a collection of treasured hippie records left behind by US-soldiers after the Vietnam War.
“I moved to Bangkok to work as a foreign correspondent, but somehow landed in a folk rock band,” she said.
“It was a pretty amazing time in my life – to be spending my days on the road with a TV crew and my nights singing hippie songs in a bar.”
She will perform this Sunday at Nectar Festival, Fremantle Arts Centre, in celebration of International Women’s Day (March 8).
