‘Hard line’ trouble

THE latest embarrassment for our Prime Minister and his Immigration Minister is the latest boat full of illegal immigrants, 260 this time, with more no doubt just around the corner.

Two things need to be taken into account from this latest arrival and that is the PM’s announcement that he “makes no apology whatsoever on taking a hard line on illegal immigration”.

Because he made a phone call to his Indonesian counterpart?

Well, if what we are seeing is “a hard line” with this growing flood, then we are in real trouble.

Secondly, for the past year all we have heard from this pair is how these people are escaping from persecution and so forth and total denial that most of them are nothing more than economic immigrants looking for a better standard of living, even admitted on the UNHCR’s own website.

But the most important words in this statement, from the mouth of Mr Rudd himself remember, is his long-awaited admission that these people are in fact illegal immigrants, something most Australians have known since the boat loads started arriving again, when Mr Rudd opened the door.

What everyone else is thinking

Peter is showing an embarrassing lack of insight. I'm not sure if he looks at his family tree he would find at least one economic immigrant. Anger should be directed towards people-smuggling perpetrators who profit from putting people's lives at risk, not to those who want to improve their condition. Are we saying that we are somehow more deserving of a good life than others?
