At $12 a cup, this rare brew is for coffee connoisseurs

FREMANTLE coffee lovers have been enjoying a treat in recent days with the “rarest coffee in the world” available at Gino’s.

Imported from Indonesia, Kopi Luwak coffee is made from coffee cherries that have been eaten and passed through the digestive tract of a marsupial called the Asian palm civet.

After collection, the beans are hygienically processed and given a medium roast to bring out the complex flavours.

Only 300 kilograms a year is produced worldwide.

Gino’s owner Paul Saccone said there had been considerable interest in the coffee, which he is selling for $12 a cup.

“Most people are trying it just to see what it’s like,” he said.

“But most people seem to like it.”

Mr Saccone said he was already more than half-way through the two kilograms of beans he ordered and would head to Indonesia in August in a bid to secure more.

Tried this on a whim today.

My preference is Five Senses Coffee (Epic Custom Blend) which is a deliciously smooth blend. However, I will have to admit the Kopi Luwak blend wasn't as bad people here make it out to be.

It has a mild flavour, with a refined taste and little bitterness. Probably ideal for those who like a palatable coffee that's 'a little different' and not too dark, strong nor bitter.

For me? $12? I prefer my Five Senses Blend - I can get 200g of coffee beans at that price. Worth a try though? Yes. Once (maybe twice). I may purchase another cup before he runs out.

Wish Gino's would stock some quality milk though, that may complement the flavours more. Bannister Downs do good quality stuff.
