MULLALOO Tower Action Group spokeswoman Julie Eady says the group opposes having a Telstra tower on top of Mullaloo Plaza because the site is 100 metres from Mullaloo Community Kindergarten and 175 metres from Mullaloo Heights Primary School.
“What we all have in common is a desire not to stop technology, but to simply insist that telcos act in a precautionary manner and avoid building these things near schools. We will not give up until a satisfactory outcome is achieved and that means no towers near our schools,” she said.
Telstra spokesman Trevor Robb said the company was committed to working with residents to find a balance between improving services and minimising the effect on the community.
“Telstra has decided to put this proposed facility on hold while we examine possibilities for alternative sites in the Mullaloo area suggested by residents as part of the consultation process,” he said.
“We confirm that while we are examining alternative sites, Telstra will not pursue the proposal at Mullaloo Plaza.”
Mr Robb said Telstra would hold another round of community consultation when it had finished examining alternative sites.
